Potassium Ethyl Xanthate

FLOTATION COLLECTOR REAGENT

Potassium Ethyl Xanthate (PEX)

A Widely Used Xanthate Collector for the Froth Flotation of Sulfide Ores

Potassium Ethyl Xanthate (PEX) is one of the xanthate derivatives widely used as a collector in the mineral processing industry.

This versatile organosulfur compound is produced as a light yellow to greenish-yellow solid powder or crystals and rapidly decomposes when exposed to air or moisture. It has a strong odor similar to carbon disulfide.

Potassium Ethyl Xanthate modifies mineral surface properties by increasing hydrophobicity. As a result, mineral particles can easily attach to air bubbles during the froth flotation process and rise to the surface of the flotation cell, improving the recovery of valuable minerals.

Chemical Formula and Structural Formula of PEX

The chemical formula of PEX is CH₃CH₂OCS₂K or, according to the Hill system, C₃H₅KOS₂.

In this structure, an ethyl group is attached to the xanthate group, forming the potassium salt of xanthate.

The OCS₂⁻ group is considered the active chemical component responsible for interaction with mineral surfaces.

This molecular structure enables PEX to bond with metal ions on sulfide mineral surfaces, improving flotation performance and recovery efficiency.

Chemical Properties

Solubility

Potassium Ethyl Xanthate (PEX) is readily soluble in water, forming potassium cations and ethyl xanthate anions. This property allows effective distribution and adsorption on mineral surfaces during flotation.

Hydrolysis

PEX, like other xanthates, may undergo hydrolysis under acidic conditions, producing ethanol and carbon disulfide. Compared with longer-chain xanthates such as PAX, PEX is more stable in acidic environments.

Oxidation

PEX can be oxidized in the presence of oxidizing agents or dissolved oxygen, forming dixanthogen, which has lower collector efficiency. Oxidation occurs more easily under alkaline conditions.

Applications of PEX in Mineral Processing

PEX is an effective flotation collector for sulfide minerals such as galena (PbS), sphalerite (ZnS), chalcopyrite (CuFeS₂), and pyrite. It performs well in high-pH flotation circuits and is widely used as a primary or auxiliary collector in mineral processing plants. PEX improves concentrate grade, optimizes flotation performance, and enhances mineral recovery. It can be used in rougher and, in some cases, scavenger flotation stages.
